Blek Le Rats work has been focused on urban art in numerous cities across the world. He is the pioneer of stencil art, introducing the concept as a means of developing his own style of graffiti. Blek was exposed to the medium for the first time when walking the streets of NYC in 1971 and was determined not to replicate the style of the American artists that had inspired him.
He applied the technique into his Parisian graffiti in 1981 and is also credited with originating the creation of life-size motifs of people and integrating them with the urban landscape in 1983. His style has been a catalyst to a new breed of innovative artists, including Banksy, Faile and most recently, Swoon.
